The study of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences entails an understanding of human communication, hearing, and its associated disorders. Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences is relevant in the field of Speech Language Pathology and Audiology. The department is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). IU offers both a Bachelor of Arts (BA) and a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Speech, Language, and Hearing Science.
Students who pursue this degree will follow a curriculum that is set to prepare them for continued studies at the graduate level to either become a Speech Language Pathologist or Audiologist. Students who do not wish to go to graduate school may become a certified Speech Language Pathologist Assistant. The Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences also offer’s students the opportunity to engage with the Deaf community through taking American Sign Language courses. IU currently offers an SLHS and ASL minor through the process of an application.
