A Spanish (B.A.) major offers students an in-depth encounter with the rich and diverse realm of Spanish and Spanish American literature, culture, and linguistics through the Spanish language. Students can explore such topics as Hispanic language and society, Hispanic film studies, novels and short stories, theater, poetry, translation, and women in literature.
This degree combines well with others. You can supplement your knowledge in another discipline by learning Spanish and studying the culture and literature of Spanish-speaking countries. A placement exam can be taken on the College of Arts and Sciences Spanish page.
The Department also offers language courses (HISP-S 251, S281, and S309) tailored specifically to heritage speakers (students who grew up learning Spanish in their homes and/or communities). Interested students should take the placement exam and speak with an academic advisor.
The Department of Spanish and Portuguese actively participates in IUB Education Abroad study programs and highly encourages their students doing minors and majors to travel abroad. IUB has many summer, semester, and academic year study abroad programs in various countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Peru, and Spain. With careful planning from the beginning, overseas study is compatible with any course of study.
