Deborah Martinez Garcia
Management and Accounting major
What are you studying and what are your plans for your future career?
"I am double majoring in Management and Accounting, hoping to start my career as an auditor and migrate to the consulting field later, perhaps as a financial analyst or accounting manager. I want to help companies achieve their fullest potential, overcome challenges, and financially thrive while being bold and making strategic decisions that will help the company grow."
What advice would you give to a student who is still trying to figure out how to choose a major or career path?
"I believe universities here in the US are great for that, since you can start with an Exploratory major, and you can also change your major relatively easily. Besides, you can enroll in different classes and explore different interests of yours in the same semester! My two biggest pieces of advice would be to talk to alumni and upperclassmen studying/working in your majors/careers of interest, and be open-minded with the different classes that you are taking! Try to not judge the class by its name or what others say about it. Give it a try and see if you like it, you might be surprised! – that’s what happened to me with accounting classes!"
What is one campus resource that has been helpful to you?
"For me, the career coach assigned in my freshman year was really helpful! Even though my career coach changed in my sophomore year, we stayed connected, and I still grab a coffee with her at least twice a semester to catch up! She helps me to define my strategies for my majors and career goals, as well as connecting me with the right people (alumni and upperclassmen). One advice from that is to not feel trapped by your assigned career coach or advisor but try other ones too and find a mentor for yourself! Someone you can trust and meet every semester, who has knowledge and great resources about your career field and can support and encourage you in your decisions!"
